Where the Sgian Dubh Started

Where the Sgian Dubh Started

The Sgian Dubh Co nowadays offers a wide variety of items from our namesake sgian dubhs, cufflinks and quaich's plus much more. It wasn't always this way though, in fact at one point we owned another company called Dykehead Horncraft. Why did this change though, and what are the comparisons of now and then?

Charles Buyers had started investing in small craft businesses at the start of the 70s', one of which was Dykehead Horncraft as previously mentioned. They were manufacturers of horn products, most of which were made of cow horn, making cutlery and decorative/ornamental items. Even our early sgian dubhs before the 'Sgian Dubh Co' existed were made from cow horn, like our SD3 and SD5's the latter we still make with blackwood.

Present day we use staghorn handles and not cow horn. In the late 90s' Stuart Buyers decided to sell the Horncraft business. This was as it was a difficult business to run and they wanted to focus on different things. This is when the Sgian Dubh Co came into the picture and was launched in 1998, keeping the rights to make horn handled sgian dubhs and walking sticks.

Over the last twenty five years the business has grown and developed, offering many different handles now as well as our horn handled ones. Such as pewter handled, resin, and recently several handmade wood models. Such a wide range allows people of different tastes to pick one that feels catered towards them or is more appealing.

As well as our sgian dubhs, we offer a wide range of other items like cufflinks, pocket watches, plaid brooches, quaich's and newly our sporrans as well as more. If you go to the homepage of our website, you'll find at the top different categories for the different items that we sell! Not many other companies offer this diverse an amount.
