The quaich has been a traditional item of Scotland for many years, it is embedded in our culture and history. It goes without saying that it has been around along time, maybe even the original meaning has been lost for some. Do you know the quaich's true meaning and purpose?
It originally was only made out of wood, by carving the wood into the shape of the quaich. It of course took on different forms eventually such as Pewter and Silver, this was when it became more mainstream and recognisable amongst Scots. Clans would use the quaich's, like the head would take a drink from it and it'd be given to each to take a drink, to show trust between them.
The quaich is very much known for its friendship and trust themes which have spanned from the days with clans to even now. At weddings you might see the bride and groom sharing a drink from a quaich which also represents a theme of love as well. It is also used at many other celebrations as well as weddings.
We have quite a vast collection of quaich's at 'The Sgian Dubh Company'. Whether it be for these celebrations such as a wedding, or even a momento of Scotland and the history it leaves, why don't you have a look? Our website has a whole section dedicated to them, but if you aren't sure here is some recommendations; Celtic Wooden Quaich, Auld Lang Syne Quaich, or Antler Pewter Quaich.
